Ultimate Provider (1 Kings 18:20-40)

Then the Lord’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering. (1 Kings 18:38)

I’m constantly amazed that the God of the universe will go out of His way for me. I mean, He needs nothing and lacks nothing. He’s the most secure, content, happy, powerful Person there is, and yet—He humbles Himself to meet me where I’m at, even when I’ve turned my back on Him.

That’s exactly what happens at Mount Carmel when Israel dumped God for the Baal gods. So Elijah calls for a showdown with them. When the prophets of Baal failed to call down fire and their gods stayed silent, the Lord showed up. Fire came down from heaven and consumed Elijah’s sacrifice, leaving no doubt who the real God is.

The people got a front row seat of how powerless their gods were compared to YHWH, the God of Israel. And even though they abandoned Him, He showed them not only that He’s more powerful, but that He’s actually better.

You might be feeling like the prophets of Baal right now. Disappointed and defeated. Maybe you’re experiencing the letdown of something you thought would be just the right fix your life needed—a job, a relationship, a dream. Maybe what once brought you happiness feels hollow. Could this be God setting the stage to show His care for you?

Sometimes God allows our idols to crash before us, so we can see how weak they really are—and how strong He really is. In my own life, idols like approval and control came crashing down, and with them came severe pain. But in that pain, God revealed his comfort and healing, something those idols couldn’t do for me.

Is something in your life falling apart?

This might be your Mount Carmel moment.

God still shows up and shows off to prove His love, not because He has to, but because He wants you to know—who won’t fail you. It’s an incredible act of humility that the most trustworthy Person would go out of His way to prove to you that He’s better than anything else you could turn to.

And there’s no greater proof than the cross. The perfect Son of God, gasping for air, bleeding out on a cross—punished as a criminal even though He was innocent—all to set us free. The cross is the fire of God’s love coming down from heaven. Not in judgment toward guilty people like us, but in love for us.

Jesus became the sacrifice to show off God’s love for you (Romans 5:8), so you could be fully forgiven, justified, and adopted into His family forever.

What other “god” would do that for you?
