Week of May 18
1 Kings 16:29-17:7
OPENER
- What’s a small, everyday situation where you find yourself trying a little too hard to be in control (like arranging things just right in the fridge, or managing a chaotic email inbox).
- Elijah was provided for by ravens bringing him food daily. If you could have any animal deliver one specific snack or treat to you every day, what animal would you choose, and what would they deliver?
DISCUSSION
- We live in a culture with many competing sources of wisdom, inspiration, and power. Where do you see modern “Baals” or “Asherah poles” competing for attention in our culture or even in your own life?
- What is one “dead idol” you find yourself depending on or trying to control in your everyday life instead of relying on God?
- In a culture where many people are “Nones,” they believe in God but don’t have specific ideas about Him, how can we lovingly and effectively share the importance of knowing the Ultimate King, who lives and is in control, rather than settling for a general belief in a god.
- Read 1 Kings 17:1 Elijah’s declaration challenged King Ahab’s dependence on Baal, proving that Yahweh is the one who controls the rain and, by extension, everything. Can you share a personal situation where you felt God was proving His control to you?
- Read 1 Kings 17:2-3 God put Elijah in the wilderness of Kerith to do something in him, preparing him for what He would do through him. How might a current difficulty or “wilderness season” in your life be God’s way of doing something in you right now (teaching you dependence, shaping your character, etc.)?
- Read 1 Kings 17:4-7 God provided for Elijah through ravens delivering food daily, making it undeniable that God was the provider. Can you share a specific instance where God provided for you in a way that felt unexpected or miraculous, making it evident that He was directly involved?
- God provides enough for the day and teaches us not to worry about tomorrow because each day has enough trouble and enough grace. How does intentionally focusing on receiving “just enough” for today, rather than worrying about or trying to secure everything needed for tomorrow or the future, change your perspective on provision, anxiety, and trust? How might it be preparing you for future ministry, service, or something else He wants to do through you?
ACTION STEP
- Considering the idols we depend on, what is one step you can take to intentionally shift your dependence from yourself (or something else) to God this week?
