WHAT IS THE VISION OF HARBOR CHURCH? A harbor is a place of refuge where ships can take shelter from the stormy seas. A place of redemption, where vessels can be restored and made new. A place of resurgence, where small boats are equipped to cross big oceans. That’s what we want to be for Honolulu. Our vision is to be:

  • A place of refuge, where people are welcomed and valued in the love of Jesus.
  • A place of redemption, where people are restored and refreshed by the grace of Jesus.
  • A place of resurgence, where people are equipped by the power of Jesus to go impact the world, for the renown of Jesus.

HOW ARE WE CARRYING OUT THIS VISION? Through our three core values:

  • We proclaim the gospel of Jesus at our Sunday gatherings, in our everyday conversations, and through our servant-hearted actions.
  • We build the community of Jesus in our Bible studies and community groups.
  • We pursue the mission of Jesus by blessing our workplaces and neighborhoods, and by training and sending church-planters across the islands and around the world.

WHY ARE WE PURSUING THIS VISION? Less than 8% of Honolulu residents currently attend a gospel-preaching church. We are passionate to see this change. We want Jesus to be renowned in Honolulu and across the islands, as more people come to receive his grace and respond with life-transforming praise.

God has given us an exciting opportunity to make an impact in Honolulu and beyond in coming years, by giving us a property in a strategic location in the Kakaako neighborhood in downtown Honolulu. A hub of business and residential activity, there are new high-rises opening every few months in the immediate area. The building was previously used as a church, so will require no major structural work, only ADA compliance, HVAC replacement, and (extensive) refurbishment.

This building gives us much-needed space for our growing church, which will allow us to invite more people, fellowship in an inviting atmosphere, and have all our keiki programs indoors (for the first time in 12 years!). It will also be a strategic base for training pastors and church-planters who will impact the islands far into the future. This property will propel us forward in achieving the vision God has given us to be a place of refuge, redemption, and resurgence for the renown of Jesus.

By God’s amazing goodness we were able to purchase this leasehold property in cash for only $110,000. We are still responsible for a ground-lease payment of $10,000/month, which will be offset through a part-time tenant. We will also need to give some significant TLC to every interior and exterior wall and surface of the building, as it has not been maintained for many years. In addition, we will need to make some significant sound/tech and furniture purchases.

We’ll need lots of volunteer workers in the coming months to make this vision a reality, by God’s grace. We also hope to raise $160,000 for renovation, equipment, and furnishings. We’re praying for God to raise up families and individuals who will give $50,000 in one-time gifts and also $9,000/month over and above their normal offerings over the next year.

Would you pray about how God might be leading your family to participate in this strategic initiative? Mahalo!
