Pride Transformed

Week of Apr 13
John 13:1-35

OPENER

  • What’s one thing you tell others to do that you might occasionally “forget” to do yourself?

DISCUSSION

  • Read John 13:1-5 Jesus knew his time was limited, yet he chose to serve his disciples by washing their feet. If you knew you had a week to live, how would that impact your priorities in serving others this week?
  • Joy is found in self-forgetfulness. Can you recall a time when you experienced joy by focusing on others rather than yourself? How did you experience that shift of focus.
  • Foot washing was a task for the lowest servants. What are some “lowly” tasks or acts of service people might often overlook or avoid?
  • Read John 13:6-10 Peter initially refused to let Jesus wash his feet. Are there times when you struggle to receive service from others? Why do you think it can be difficult to accept help, and how can you become more open to it?
  • Are there areas in your life (work, family, school, community) where you tend to prioritize serving yourself and your desires over serving Christ and others? What could it look like to serve Christ and others in those areas?
  • Read John 13:16, 34 Following Jesus’ example of humility and service comes through receiving Jesus’ love and sacrifice. How have you experienced this connection between receiving God’s love and growing in humility in your own life?

ACTION STEP

  • Jesus loved and served those who denied, doubted, and betrayed him. Is there someone in your life who might be challenging to love in this way? What is one practical step you can take this week to serve them?
