Week of October 20
1 Peter 1:13-2:3
Opener
- What’s an experience in life where you felt like you were reborn? (like a fresh start in life, an epic day at the spa, etc.)
Discussion
In the first part of chapter 1, Peter reminded us of the new birth we experienced in Christ. Now he shows us what that new life looks like.
- Read 1 Peter 1:13. Peter says our new life gives us a new focus and makes us “sober-minded” rather than intoxicated. What are some things other than Christ that can capture and intoxicate your mind?
- Read 1:14-16. New life gives us new holiness. Holiness means being set apart, and Augustine said that Christians are most set apart from the world in three areas. What’s one way Christians are called to be different in the area of:
- Money?
- Sex?
- Power?
- Read 1:18-19. We’ve been set free from our slavery to sin by the precious blood of Christ. What are some ways we take our freedom for granted?
- How would it change your life if you fully understood how “precious” the blood of Christ is?
- Read 1:20-25. New life gives us new love that’s powered by God’s gospel love for us. How can God’s forgiveness and acceptance of you free you to love others?
- Read 2:1-3. New life gives us a new desire for God’s presence, like a newborn baby desires milk. What is it about God you most appreciate and desire right now?
Action Step
- What’s one practical step you’ll take this week to be in God’s presence more?
