Lessons from Black Sunday

art1a.jpgThe biggest earthquake Hawaii’s seen in 30 years. The longest blackout many people can remember. Here’s what we learned:

God’s in charge. We’re not.

We think we have control over our environment. We assume there’s not much for us to fear. Sunday gave us a good reminder to fear God, who can send us back to the stone age whenever he chooses.

We’re overdependent on technology.
All day, I was dying for a cup of coffee and a chance to check my email. I thought my cell phone would save us, but I could only get a few calls out all day. You don’t realize how much you depend on technology until you lose it. The people who live in the pinnacle of technological advancement, high-rise condos, were the worst off: they didn’t even have water all day.

TV stinks.

I spent Sunday afternoon playing football with Caleb out in our cul-de-sac. If we had power, I probably would have been planted on the sofa, watching football on TV. Lame.
