Week of December 12
Exodus 20:4-6
OPENER
- Which app, streaming service, social media site, game, etc. are you most addicted to?
DISCUSSION
- Read Exodus 20:4. Idols are what we turn to instead of God to get what you want. What are some popular forms of idolatry in our culture?
- How have you idolized something (a person, job, possession, social status, etc.) above God?
- What if you believed God will give you more than your idol? What might change?
- Read Exodus 20:5–6. Sinful jealousy comes out of insecurity and neediness, but God’s jealousy comes out of his desire for our good. What difference does it make to know that God is jealous for you?
- This passage reveals God’s love and grace, along with his discipline and judgment. Which side of God are you most drawn to? How might that be a false idea of God (and therefore an idol)?
ACTION STEP
- Think about an idol you might be serving: a relationship, a reputation, a job, a status symbol, a goal, etc. What would it look like for you to worship Jesus more than that idol this week?
