Expecting Glory

And the glory of the LORD will appear, and all humanity together will see it, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. (Isaiah 40:5)

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Do you expect glory this Christmas? Or do you expect the same, repeated Christmas – shopping, gifts, cards, trees, food, relatives? Even a beautiful Christmas Eve service? How much of this is really glorious? Or, is it mundane and ordinary?

I was recently reading an Advent Devotional, where the question was posed, “What would your life look like if you treated the universe as an enchanted place?” This question stopped me. What, an enchanted place, filled with spirits, magic, surprises? Do I even think this way? Is this a C. S. Lewis thing?

Then I thought about Christmas:

An angel appears to Mary

Mary, a virgin conceives

An angel appears to Joseph

Joseph marries pregnant Mary

Joseph takes his pregnant wife to Bethlehem because Caesar calls a census

An angel appears to shepherds announcing Jesus’ birth

A multitude of angels sang praises to God

Shepherds believe the angels, found the newborn child and worshiped him.

These eight things are all enchanted – how did I miss them?

We do live in an enchanted world. Like Scrooge, I woke up before I missed the glorious! Don’t miss it this Christmas.

The prophet Isaiah wrote, “And the glory of the LORD will appear, and all humanity together will see it, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” (Isaiah 40:5)

The apostle John verified that the glory did appear, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)
