Change Your Vigilance

Community Group Discussion Questions
Week of Feb 22
2 Peter 3:14-18

OPENER

  • What’s a time you had to wait for a really long while, and what helped you stay sane?
    – Think about what you hoped for in that moment and what kept you steady. This helps us notice what we tend to rely on when life stretches us.

DISCUSSION

  • What are ways impurity creeps back in through our culture, our entertainment, or our habits?
Look for the subtle stuff, not the dramatic. Think about the small ways your heart gets pulled off-center.
  • Read 2 Peter 3:14  Where have you seen old “spots” try to return, and what helps you stay vigilant?
    – Be honest about the places you struggle. Think about what helps you stay focused on Jesus with hope, not fear.
  • Read 2 Peter 3:15–17 How have you seen Christians drift by elevating an implication of the gospel above the gospel itself?
    – Share patterns, not people, times when good things got treated like the main thing.
  • How can our CG cultivate a shared commitment to sound doctrine so our zeal is guided by truth, not feelings or preferences?
    – Think about simple ways we can keep opening the Bible together, asking good questions, and checking our assumptions.
  • Where do you feel tempted to shape God around your preferences instead of Scripture?
-Be honest about where you try to shrink or distort who God is.
  • Read 2 Peter 3:18 Where do you tend to “try harder” instead of receiving Jesus’ grace?
    – Notice the areas where you push yourself instead of relying on Jesus’ strength. Grace fuels growth, it doesn’t replace it.
  • Growing as a Learner: How have your beliefs about Jesus shaped your thoughts or actions lately?
    – Think of a specific truth about Jesus—His kindness, His authority, His nearness—and how it affected something you did or felt recently.

ACTION STEP

  • What is one step you can take to be more vigilant in your purity, theology, or priorities?
-Pick one small, practical step. Vigilance grows by staying close to Jesus, not by pushing harder on your own.

DIG DEEPER

  • We study Scripture to understand what it says, means, and intends, patiently walking with the text instead of moving too quickly to application.

OBSERVATION – What Does It Say?

  • List all the commands (imperatives).
  • Who are the people described in verses 15–16?
  • What is the contrast between those who twist Scripture and those who must grow?
  • What two key phrases describe how believers should be found in verse 14?

INTERPRETATION – What Does It Mean?

  • What does “make every effort” tell us about Peter’s expectation for believers?
  • Why would Peter group Paul’s letters with “the rest of the Scriptures”?
  • In verse 16, what is the significance of things being “hard to understand”?
  • What does being “carried away” suggest about the influence of false teaching indoors and out?

CROSS REFERENCE & CONTEXT(Connect the Bible to Itself)

  • How does verse 15 reflect what Peter said about God’s patience in 3:9?
  • Where else in Scripture is growth described in terms of grace + knowledge (cf. 2 Peter 1)?
  • Peter contrasts false teachers and instability throughout this letter (e.g., 2 Peter 2). How does that help us understand verses 16–17 here?
