Celebrate the Word

Week of December 15
John 1:1-3

Opener

  • What’s your favorite tradition during Christmas celebrations?

Discussion
All through Scripture, God commands us to celebrate. And John gives us some big profound truths to celebrate about the arrival of Jesus.

  • Read John 1:1-3. John’s gospel starts by throwing us straight into the deep end. Swimming in deep water gives a sense of awe. What awes you most about Jesus?
  • John says Jesus is God, but many people view Jesus as just a repairman, therapist, or life-coach. Which of these views do you tend to default to?
  • If Jesus isn’t God, then all we have are empty traditions to follow and empty commandments to obey. How can knowing Jesus is God influence you to follow him more seriously?
  • John says Jesus created you, which also means he owns you and has the right to tell you what to do. How does this truth challenge the common cultural idea of individual autonomy and self-determination?
  • Colossians 1 says Jesus created all things and “holds all things together. How have you seen Jesus holding things together in your life recently?
  • When John calls Jesus “The Word,” he’s saying that we can see everything God wants us to know about himself in Jesus. What do you appreciate most when you see the life of Jesus in the gospels?

Action Step

  • What’s one thing about Jesus you most appreciate? Commit to spend time in prayer every day this week praising him for that attribute.

Prayer Step

  • If Jesus created you, he knows how to fix you. What’s one thing you need Jesus to fix about you (not just fix about your life) right now? Pray this week for him to accomplish that.
