Purpose Revealed (1 Peter 2:4-10)

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9)

Do you ever get up in the morning, look in the mirror, and think that you are looking at your mother (or father)? Your hair is disheveled and you see bits of gray, your face has some wrinkles, and when you lift your arm to comb your hair, you see sagging instead of biceps. Well, maybe you haven’t experienced this yet, but you probably will.

If you looked in the same mirror and you saw God’s reflection of you, you might be surprised. First, you would see that you are chosen; God had lots of people to choose from, but he chose you. Next, you will see that you are royalty. Royalty, really? Yes, you were chosen by a king. Furthermore, he made you a priest, which means that you have been ordained to be an intercessor between the king and other people. Then, you are shocked to see that you are perfectly holy. Doesn’t God know that I am a sinner? Yes, he knows, but he paid the penalty for your sin and you are legally sinless. So, the image in the mirror is one of holiness. Finally, you see that you are God’s possession. You belong to God, who created the world’s wealth and knows everything, and is fully capable of taking care of your every need.

Wow! I had no idea that the image that I see in the mirror was of a perfect, royal princess, chosen by the greatest of kings. With this incredible dignity, what is my plan for today? I am to accept my priestly duties and sing his praises. So, comb that princess hair, brush those ivory teeth, and prepare for royal duties.
