I always thank my God when I mention you in my prayers, because I hear of your love for all the saints and the faith that you have in the Lord Jesus. I pray that your participation in the faith may become effective through knowing every good thing that is in us for the glory of Christ. For I have great joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother. (Philemon 4-6)
Paul wrote this short letter to Philemon, who hosts a house church in Colossae. It’s the only New Testament letter that Paul wrote to an individual. How encouraging it must have been to receive this letter. Paul commends Philemon for loving his fellow believers and refreshing their hearts. What a wonderful leader Philemon must have been! Furthermore, his love for his brothers was encouraging to Paul, who describes himself as an imprisoned old man. Philemon is continuing the ministry that Paul started.
Paul commends Philemon for his love and faith, and encourages him to continue to grow and become more effective. The Christian life is never static. We can always grow in our faith and our knowledge of Christ; we can always be more loving and generous, using our resources to help our brothers and sisters in Christ.
How do you think Philemon felt when he received this letter? He probably was humbled and felt unworthy of Paul’s compliments. He was also probably encouraged to continue and expand his ministry. Paul refreshed Philemon’s heart, as Philemon was refreshing the hearts of those who met in his home.
This Christmas, think of those from Harbor Church that are continually encouraging you. Maybe a card or message to them would refresh their hearts and encourage them to grow and become more effective – for the glory of Christ!
