“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
Are you feeling anxious? Feeling depressed? Weary? Burdened? This feeling of ‘burden’ has grown due to many reasons — whether it’s rising costs, work stresses, and social media comparisons, to name a few. But there is good news. This promise from Jesus is for you. Our Lord Jesus says to come to him, and he promises to give you rest.
God has designed us to work and to rest. If we work without rest, we grow tired. If we rest without working, we feel aimless. We were meant for both.
As I reflect on these words in light of the Maui fires, I find some burdens are too heavy to carry alone. We need Jesus, and the body of Christ — the church. At times, we do not know how to process something. We might look to marriage, friendship, the news, hobbies, or work. However, apart and outside of Jesus, there is strife. Within the humble and lowly yoke of Jesus, there is rest.
You just need to come as you are. Whether you are at work or at home. Whether you are in your bed or in your car. Whether you feel tired or heavy in heart. Just come as you are. God can take your burden and give you rest for your souls. Your heartknows the balm you need.
