When I came to you, brothers and sisters, announcing the mystery of God to you, I did not come with brilliance of speech or wisdom. I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. (1 Corinthians 2:1-2)
This obviously isn’t true. Just skim the rest of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, and you’ll see Paul knew and taught many things besides the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. He taught about divisions between believers, sexual impurity, food sacrificed to idols, and on and on.
There are many practical topics we need to know and be taught. But the single most important topic that will shape our understanding of every other topic is Jesus Christ and him crucified.
Christ crucified addresses divisions between believers, because we’re all just sinners who are lost and hopeless without his blood. Christ crucified empowers our sexual purity, because if Jesus sacrificed himself for us, we can sacrifice our lusts and selfish pleasures. Christ crucified gives us freedom to approach things in this world that have wicked origins (like food sacrificed to idols, art made by unbelievers, politicians who don’t glorify God, etc.) because Jesus conquered the wicked gods of this world at the cross.
Every decision we make and priority we pursue in life should be influenced and empowered by Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
