“He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.” (Colossians 1:13)
Paul poised his pen. He had been praying for Colossae, giving thanks for them and rejoicing for their love and faith. But he saw a danger brewing in Colossae. Colossae was a fairly unimportant market town – by far the least significant city to receive a letter from Paul – but the world’s influence through false teaching and pagan culture was starting to steep through and infiltrate the local church’s hearts. The church was tempted to look in the darkness for a fulfilling life, by living apart from their Savior.
How did Paul respond to this crisis in Colossae? Paul wrote one of the greatest songs about Jesus. It teaches us that Jesus is not just a king, but Jesus is the King and Creator over everything. Jesus, the exact imprint of God and sustainer of creation. Jesus, the sole focal point and source of all goodness. He is Lord over the church and has first place over everything!
What does this mean for us? We too need to remember that Jesus is greater than our temptations and trials. Jesus gives all we need for spiritual life in Him. Only He satisfies and gives a full life. Nothing else will do.
And what should we do? Receive and share in the inheritance of Jesus (Col. 1:12)! Remember, beloved, we have been rescued, freed, and forgiven (1:13-14) – “out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2.9-10). When you feel unimportant or feel all around is darkness, remember that Jesus not only made you, but he will also sustain you and be your marvelous light.
