“For you sympathized with the prisoners and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, because you know that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession.” (Hebrews 10:34)
Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Ruth, Deborah, and Paul are a few names synonymous with bold faith. None of those people were perfect, but all of them exercised a great deal of trust in God. They had a trust that any believer would love to have. It’s that type of faith which carries a person through the best and especially the worst of times. The good news is that we too, like those in Scripture, can have confidence that we will not fall away.
In Hebrews 10:32, the author encourages believers to “remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.” The author points believers back to their previous endurance through sufferings. He tells reminds them that they were mocked and afflicted (v. 33). But why? What got them through this trying time. He says, “because you know that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession” (v. 34). Christians are able to endure when they recognize that what they have in Christ is better and more enduring that riches, pleasure, reputation, and even life itself. So you want to live boldly? You want to slay giants? You want to have an unshakeable faith? Don’t rely on yourself. Look instead to Jesus, your better and more enduring possession.
