Proverbs 10:17-32 | What’s Your Word Limit?

READ Proverbs 10:17-32

When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is prudent.” (Proverbs 10:19)

Have you ever said something that you wanted to take back but it was too late? Maybe you were talking to someone, and for some reason that statement unexpectedly came flying out of your mouth. This is one of the reasons the Proverb writer warns us about being too opinionated or loose with our words, as it can lead to damage.

About twenty-five years ago, most of our words were primarily spoken through in-person conversations, phone calls, and hand-written letters. Texting and emails were on the brink and preparing an entirely new way of communicating. As the laptop and smartphone became common “necessities” in our homes, suddenly we learned more about each other’s views and opinions than we ever had before. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok have given people a platform to either contribute to good or bad.

If you’re someone who frequently posts on your social media account, or you engage in the comments section on other’s posts, are you someone who chooses your words wisely, or do you say whatever comes to mind? Whether you’re on social media, texting a friend, or having a discussion on a sensitive topic with a coworker, the Proverbs writer says to count your words. Be selective and thoughtful. And be careful to give your two-cents on every topic out there.

If you’re a follower of Jesus, people are seeing and hearing Jesus through your actions and your words. And so, the words that come out of your mouth will reflect this Jesus who you claim to follow. Paul gives us wisdom on how disciples of Jesus should use their words, as he writes, “No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29-30). How can you build up someone today?
