READ Proverbs 7:6-27

Don’t let your heart turn aside to her ways; don’t stray onto her paths. For she has brought many down to death; her victims are countless. (Proverbs 7:25-26)

We often forget how intoxicating the ways of this world are. The things the world values versus the things God’s kingdom values are very different. What the world offers usually provides a quick dose of pleasure and happiness. While the kingdom does offer present blessings, its fullness is still to come. So the things that we can have “now” in this world becomes much more attractive to us than the things that will come later.

By now, you may be starting to pick up that Proverbs is going to continually hammer its main points again and again, because it’s often hard to live out. Today’s words of wisdom is to stay on track. Don’t lose focus. If you’re trying to live for Jesus’ ways, and this world is starting to make it feel really hard, don’t give up.

So how do you not “let your heart turn aside” to the alluring ways of this world? The Apostle Paul tells us that it’s possible not to fall for the seductions of this world, but only if you’re walking by the Spirit. The way you don’t stray off course is by “keeping in step with the Spirit” (Gal. 5:25). Are you trying to grow more in purity, generosity, or patience? Has it been a few days now, and you’re starting to lose momentum? You’re in a good place, because now you’ve got nothing but God’s Spirit to rely on. Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit and to help you keep in step with his Holy Spirit. Ask God to reveal the new creation that you already are and becoming more and more each day (2 Cor. 5:17).
