2 Samuel 11 | Don’t Let Sin Linger

READ 2 Samuel 11

In the spring when kings march out to war, David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 11:1)

David was a man after God’s own heart. He was someone chosen by God to lead the people of Israel. David was blessed with an everlasting covenant with God. And still David was a man who committed great sin.

In 2 Samuel 11, David is a seasoned king. He has experienced God’s faithfulness time and time again. However, it says, “In the spring when kings march out to war, David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.” Now that might not seem like it’s something of great importance but what follows is tragic. Rather than go to war, David would see a woman bathing on her rooftop, bring her into his home, take advantage of her, and then when she conceives a child have her husband murdered to try and cover up her sin. David sinned against God in all of these actions. But that sin began with his failure to fulfill his calling as a king.

What you see in these horrific events is that rather than fulfill his calling, David allows sin to linger in his heart. Instead of going to war he stays home. And before you know it, sin has given birth to death. James 1:15 says this, “Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.” That’s exactly what we see in this entire situation. Even the smallest sins when it continues will eventually lead to death.
