In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)
Weak. One word that a lot of us would not describe ourselves as, whether it is true or not. We are impressed when we see a boxer land a knockout punch, cheer when a lifeguard saves someone being pulled by a rip current, and other physical feats. While it is true that we can be physically strong naturally, is it the same case spiritually?
Although as Christians we have been freed from the penalty of sin (Romans 6:20), remnants of our sinful nature inherited from Adam still remain with us. As a result, all of creation “groans to be set free from the bondage to decay” (Romans 8:20-22). So if we’re spiritually weak naturally how do we overcome it? Just like salvation, it does not come from what we do but what God does. We have the Holy Spirit to help us in our weakness (Romans 8:26).
While trials (James 1:2-4) and temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13), and general day to day struggles are to be expected in the Christian life, it is important to remember that these are all temporary and will pass away (Revelation 21:4). How does the Holy Spirit help us during these difficult circumstances? The Holy Spirit helps us pray and intercedes for us (Romans 8:26), he is our Comforter/Counselor (John 14:16) and he gives us wisdom (Isaiah 11:2). The list doesn’t end here!
In this passage, Paul is telling us that although we are weak and still have remnants of the “old man” in us, instead of ignoring us, God guides us. It is during our times of weakness where we are made strong (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). Let us rejoice and give thanks that our help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth, who doesn’t slumber nor sleep!
