But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching to which you were handed over, and having been set free from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. (Romans 6:17–18)
Why should you thank God today? Paul gives several reasons. You were once a slave of sin but now you are slaves to God. You deserved death from your sin; now you receive God’s gift of life in Christ (Rom. 6:23). You had grown shame’s fruit; but now God is growing you into His Son’s likeness (Rom. 6:21-22). Praise God! Thank Him that He loved you and freed you. Thank Him for the gospel. Thank Him for letting it transform your heart. And thank Him that you want to obey Him from the heart.
By now, the answer to Paul’s opening question should be obvious. The answer to “Should we sin because we are not under the law but under grace?” is a big “NOPE”! For God gave you a new heart and faith in His word. Another way to put it is that, thanks to God, your tastebuds are changing. One small step of faith in Him and one giant leap in praise, sanctification, and eternal life. Will you join Paul in praising God that the love of God now compels you to live for Him?
