Genesis 18 — Reminders of God’s Promises

READ Genesis 18

The Lord said, “I will certainly come back to you in about a year’s time, and your wife Sarah will have a son!” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent behind him. (Genesis 18:10)

In yesterday’s chapter 17 in Genesis, Abraham and Sarah got their names changed by God and the promise that Abraham would be the father of many nations and all of this would be according to God’s plan to use a couple who was well-past their child-bearing age.  We know that all things are possible with God, especially through the most unlikeliest methods that the world would expect.  In today’s Genesis reading, God gives Abraham a dramatic reminder of the unlikely promise He just told Abraham a chapter ago.  We also see Sarah’s initial response of laughter to a miracle being accomplished through her, after many years of frustration.

Are you like Abraham and need constant reminders of God’s promises for you as you continue to live and serve Him?  We do need to hear God’s promises over and over again.  This is a way that God uses to encourage and develop our faith.  As Romans 10:17 says, “So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.”  What is happening in your life right now?  Are you being inundated with mixed messages from social media, 24/7 Newsfeed, and friends that are conflicting with God’s word?  When you wake up in the morning, do you open God’s word to meditate on His promises or do you check your email and phone texts first?  Let us thank God for His daily reminders to us of His promises because we are doubtful, negative, and sinful in nature and we need God’s word to be the final say in our thoughts, words, and actions.
