The Lord said to Abram: Go from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, I will curse anyone who treats you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you. (Genesis 12:1-3)
Abraham is often referred to as the Father of faith and for good reason. He was called to leave everything he had, his country, and even his family to go to an unknown land (Gen. 12:1). God literally told him to go to a land that I WILL show you. And Abraham does just that. He leaves behind his father, and goes out in faith. God promises that in Abraham all the families of the earth would be blessed.
God says “I will show you,” “I will make of you a great nation,” “I will bless you.” All of these indicate that there is no questioning if these will happen. As the Scripture says, God is not a man that he should lie (Num. 23:19). God makes sure that despite Abraham’s failures and faults the plan to bless him is never revoked. In the same way, nothing can separate God’s people from his love (Rom. 8:38-39).
Now Abraham is blessed to be a blessing to all the families of the earth (Gen. 12:3). This is ultimately realized because Abraham has Isaac, who has Jacob, who has Judah, which eventually leads to David, and ultimately to Jesus Christ. Through Jesus, God has made everyone who believes “sons of God, through faith” (Gal. 3:26). The Church is the ultimate expression of God blessing all the families of the earth through Abraham. So, having received Christ we know that we were blessed with salvation not just for us to enjoy but also that we might share with more people who would then come to experience God’s faithful love toward His people.
