This is the document containing the family records of Adam. On the day that God created man, he made him in the likeness of God; he created them male and female. When they were created, he blessed them and called them mankind. (Genesis 5:1-2)
Genesis 5:1 comes off of the heels of some very important and horrible events. Just two chapters prior we saw the first sin committed by Adam and Eve. We also saw the grace of God as he promised that a seed of the woman would come who would crush the head of the serpent that deceived Eve (Gen. 3:15). However, when we get to chapter 4 we witness the first instance of fratricide in the Bible as Cain kills his own brother Abel. At the end of chapter 4 we saw that God’s promises are not thwarted by that horrific act because he provides another seed, another son, who is named Seth (Gen. 4:25-26). That’s where we are in Genesis 5:1-2.
What develops in Genesis 5 is the continuation of this covenant line through whom God will bring about the promised savior. We also see the spread of sin in the world. However, Genesis 5 contains some very important truths. The first is that despite the fallen nature of humanity they retain the image of God. This means that even sinners are endowed with inherent value. Also, despite sin God reiterates the fact that he blessed them and named them Man (Gen. 5:1). God, through this new son, will bless his people. God continues to workout his plan of salvation. It shows God’s promises will not be thwarted by the serpent or sin. Genesis 5 gives us confidence in God’s power and desire to fulfill his promises. It also means that God receives the glory.
