Genesis 3 — Our Sin and God’s Mercy

by | Aug 25, 2020

READ Genesis 3

I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel. (Genesis 3:15)

This passage tells of sin and its consequences, but even more than this, it tells about God’s great mercy. Adam and Eve weren’t willing to trust God’s care for them, and they rebelled, choosing the path that leads to death (Gen. 2:16). But even as humankind is rebelling, God is revealing his plan for a great rescue. Instead of the instant death they deserve, God lets them live. Not only this, but in verse 15, he promises to send a rescuer, a descendent of Adam and Eve that will defeat the deceiver forever. In verse 21, we even see a picture of Jesus, when an animal dies to provide a covering for Adam and Eve.

I used to think that if I were in Adam and Eve’s place, I would have been able to avoid doing the ONE THING that God prohibited. But don’t we all fall into the same trap every day? Even though everything good we have is from God, we still think we know better than him. We chase after money, power, prestige, and experiences, instead of a relationship with the One who made it all.

What lies are directing your life right now? Let us look to Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6), as the only way we can be free from the lies we believe and experience true life with God.
