Psalm 144 – Equipped for Battle

READ PSALM 144

Blessed be the Lord, my rock who trains my hands for battle and my fingers for warfare. (Psalms 144:1)

We’ve all come to realize something over the last few months that most of us had forgotten before: life is a fight. Right now it’s a daily battle to figure out new ways of working, to keep our kids moving forward in school, to keep ourselves and our families connected to God and his family. That’s all on top of the lifelong battles we wage against the flesh, the world, and the enemy.

David was fighting a literal battle when he wrote this Psalm, so his experience is very relevant to us. He saw God act as a “rock,” providing protection. He saw God as “my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer. He is my shield, and I take refuge in him” (verse 2). But God didn’t just act defensively, he also equipped David to go on the offense: “he trains my hands for battle and my fingers for warfare.”

During this extraordinary time, many of us are just trying to survive, waiting for battles to come to us and then figuring out how to react. But God equips you to proactively go on the offense. So proactively fight to stay connected to God. Fight to stay productive. Fight to bless your family, your friends, your neighbors. Fight to display and proclaim the gospel to our watching world.
