READ PSALM 136

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. ‘His faithful love endures forever’. (Psalms 136:1)

When you think of God what do you think of? What characteristic stands out to you? You might say God is powerful. He’s all knowing. He’s good. Those are all true but one of the characteristics God displays the most is this “steadfast love”. The word for God’s steadfast love is the Hebrew word hesed. It speaks to God’s faithfulness, his mercy, and the unending nature of his love. What we find in Psalm 136 is that God is motivated to act based on his love.

It says that because of his steadfast love he rescued Israel from Pharoah. Because of his steadfast love he defeats Israel’s enemies. Because of his steadfast love he remembers us in our low estate. Notice it’s not because we do anything for God that he does good to us. He acts simply because he has this love that never fails. There is no more clear indication of his steadfast love than when God sent Jesus, to liven, to die, to be buried, and to be resurrected so that he could display his love to us. So today, as often as you can, repeat the refrain from Psalm 136 over and over again, “his steadfast love endures forever.”
