READ PSALM 118

The Lord is for me; I will not be afraid. (Psalms 118:6)

What do you think God thinks, when he thinks about you? When God thinks about you, what does He feel? When God looks at you, what does He see? When God talks about you, what does He say? When most people answer that question, they go two opposite directions. Many people in our culture would say, “I’m sure God likes me just because I’m me! Who wouldn’t like me? I’m very likeable!” Other people would be on the opposite side: “I don’t think God likes me. He barely puts up with  me. He might even be disgusted by me.”

Some people think God is for them, just because they’re them. Other people But the author of this Psalm thinks different. He knows God is for him, but only because of God’s “faithful love” (verse 1). That’s the perspective Paul has too: “If God is for us, who is against us? He did not even spare his own Son but gave him up for us all. How will he not also with him grant us everything?” (Romans 8:31-32). God is for you, because in his love he gave up his own son for you. Why wouldn’t he give you anything else you need?

Maybe you’re struggling to make your paycheck stretch to the end of the month. God didn’t even spare his own Son, so how will he not also give you the resources you need to survive? Maybe you’re desperate for a friend, a husband, or a wife. How will he not give you the friendship and companionship you need? Maybe you’re totally stressed out at work There’s a mountain of things to do. How will he not give you peace and joy and contentment and discipline and time-management? Maybe you’re struggling against some temptation, and you keep losing. How will he not give you strength to resist? Maybe you’re trying to love your kids well, but you’re just tired all the time. How will he not give you energy and enthusiasm? God is for you. How will he not supply all of your needs?
