Psalm 109 – God Is Your Defender
God of my praise, do not be silent. For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me. (Psalms 109:1-2)
David is crying out for God’s help because his friends have falsely accused him. He begs God to save and justify him. Have you been falsely accused before? Blamed for something you didn’t do? It hurts when it’s someone you work with. It hurts even more when it’s someone you’re close to. Someone you’ve given love, affection, and grace to.
You can take comfort that David’s great-great-grandson experienced the same thing. Jesus was betrayed by one of his best friends Judas, and falsely accused by Judas’ co-conspirators the chief priests. Jesus gave Judas only love, affection, and grace, and he was repaid with brutal torture and an unjust death. But God brought capital justice to Judas, and new life to Jesus. And he promises the same for you, no matter what kind of mistreatment you’ve experienced before. God “raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might display the immeasurable riches of his grace through his kindness to us in Christ Jesus” (Eph 2:6-7). He is your ultimate defender.
