Psalm 108 – God Is Worthy of Praise
My heart is confident, God; I will sing; I will sing praises with the whole of my being. (Psalms 108:1)
Everyday we are tempted to begin our day by catching up on our emails or the latest news story. When we see all that we have to do we can get overwhelmed and then like good Christians we know that we must go to God for help. In Psalm 108, David spends the second half of the psalm asking God for help, but before he does that he first resolves to praise the Lord. It’s clear that David will not let anything get in the way of his song of praise. I believe we need more of that.
So often we come to God with prayers and if we’re not careful we think of God as someone who has to answer every one of our demands. When we don’t get what we want from God we pout and moan. But what that does is show that God is really not what we are after. We’re after what God can give us. Instead our attitude should begin with praising God and putting our confidence in God. We need to say, like David, “I will sing praises with the whole of my being” (v.1). Whether I get every task on my to-do list done or not, whether the news is good or not, and whether God answers my request or not I will praise the Lord. It’s that attitude that shows just how valuable our God is. He’s worthy of praise no matter what is happening.
