Psalm 93 – God Rules Over Chaos
The Lord reigns! He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed, enveloped in strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be shaken. (Psalms 93:1)
Even when the world seems like it’s been turned upside down, we can trust that God will keep us firmly established because he’s the reigning King who’s firmly in control. Human kings need to clothe themselves with expensive robes and surround themselves with menacing soldiers to convince people of their strength. God doesn’t need to stoop to that level — his only clothing is his own majesty and strength. That’s why we can rest in his control, even when the world is confused and chaotic.
Later in the Psalm, the author mentions God’s control over the seas. In the ancient world, the ocean was the ultimate symbol of chaos and danger. The ocean wasn’t a playground for them, like it is for us. It was a death-trap. They had no compasses to guide them on the sea, and on cloudy days their ships were lost on the sea. Even a small storm could make them sink into the sea. Which is why it was so reassuring for first-century Christians to hear that when Jesus returns to bring the new heavens and new earth, the sea will be “no more” (Rev 21:1). God has sovereign control over all the confusing, chaotic things in this world and in our lives. We can trust him!
