Psalm 90 – Seize The Day!
In your sight a thousand years are like yesterday that passes by, like a few hours of the night. You end their lives; they sleep. They are like grass that grows in the morning — in the morning it sprouts and grows; by evening it withers and dries up. (Psalms 90:4-6)
To most people, the last few months have seemed like they lasted a thousand years. But to our eternal God, a thousand years passes by like a single day. Moses, the author of this Psalm, is reminding us how short our lives on this earth really are, in light of eternity. We’re like a shoot of grass that sprouts and then withers within a few hours.
James uses the metaphor of a mist to show how life only lasts a few moments, and he says this should give us urgency: “You are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes. … So it is sin to know the good and yet not do it” (James 4:14-17). Your life is here and gone in a flash, so if there’s something good that God is calling you to do, you don’t know how much time you’ve got to do it. Maybe God will give you a second or third chance to do good. Maybe he won’t.
Which means that now’s the time to do good in your marriage. Take your wife out on a date, now that restaurants are open again. Surprise your husband with a night away, now that we can travel. Now’s the time to do good with your kids. Get down on the floor and play with them, instead of staring at your phone. Now’s the time to do good in your church. Get into a community group and start blessing some people. Sign up to serve in that ministry you’ve been meaning to volunteer for. Now’s the time to do good in your workplace. Send an uplifting text to the coworker who seems discouraged. You don’t know if you’ll get another opportunity!
