Psalm 78 – God’s Compassion Overflows

READ PSALM 78

Yet he was compassionate; he atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them. He often turned his anger aside and did not unleash all his wrath. (Psalms 78:38)

In last week’s sermon, Pastor Matt mentioned a predicament that would not be good for ourselves.  How terrible would it be if everything we did depended on us?  In this morning’s psalm, David looks back at Israel’s past and mentioned how they disobeyed God repeatedly with their hearts, words, and actions despite God’s repeated acts of faithfulness to His people.  We are often guilty of this, too.  In fact, everyday we sin against God through our thoughts, words and actions towards God and those around us.

The good news for us is that God is still compassionate towards us.  God is merciful to us and is always ready to forgive us when we repent of our sinful ways.  God’s ultimate display of love for us in allowing His one and only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for all of our sins, shows God’s compassion for us.  We don’t deserve this type of mercy, yet God gave us forgiveness and new life in Christ because of His goodness and love.  Have you thanked God for his continuing compassion and mercy that overflows to us every day?  Try to live out today in thanksgiving for God’s love and that He doesn’t give us the punishment and wrath that we deserve.
