Psalm 77 – Remember God’s Faithfulness
Then I said, “I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.” (Psalms 77:10)
In the social media age we are inundated with curated images and posts which often display that best parts of someone’s life. However, as people begin to catch on to the fact that everything is not as it appears online there has been, at least in the people that I know, a longing for authenticity. We authenticity is something I love about the Psalms. The Psalms often are words penned by people who were struggling with doubts, fears, and unbelief. The Psalms are filled with people who struggled to keep their eyes on God and I love that because if I’m honest, the things written in the Psalms are things that I have struggled with.
Take Psalm 77. In the Psalm the author asks, “Will the Lord spurn forever, and never be favorable again? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at the end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” These questions are the true questions of someone struggling in the fight of faith. I love this Psalm because it shows that believers are often not impervious to difficulty. The authors of Scripture were authentic. But what I love even more is that the Psalm not only highlights real genuine lament but gives a solution to these difficulties. The solution is in Psalm 77:10. When you begin to ask these questions you have to also say this, “I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.” In other words, appeal to God and His faithfulness over the years. Struggling with sin? Appeal to God who has conquered sin for you. Struggling wondering if God’s promises still stand? Appeal to the God who has fulfilled His promise to send a savior through Jesus. Struggling with the lack of authenticity in the world? Appeal with the God who knows all you struggles internally and externally and still genuinely loves you. That is the antidote to the real questions that will come up in your life.
