Psalm 74 – God Rules Over Nature
You divided the sea with your strength; you smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the water; you crushed the heads of Leviathan; you fed him to the creatures of the desert. (Psalms 74:13-14)
Today’s scientists and doctors have brought much of nature under our control. Atoms and sun-rays that used to cause great damage have been harnessed to power our phones and laptops. Ocean depths and space vacuums that used to be lethal have been tamed and explored. Viruses that used to kill millions have now been eradicated. All of this is a gift of God’s common grace, and we’re praying for him to pour out more grace on our scientists and doctors as they race to find a vaccine for Covid.
But ultimately, our hope isn’t in a vaccine to deliver us from nature. Our hope is in the God who rules over nature. He smashes the heads of sea monsters, and crushes the heads of Leviathan. He could wipe this virus out today if he wanted to. For some reason? He doesn’t. Probably so more people will be driven to depend on him and his sovereign grace. This is a time for us to deepen our trust in God’s control over nature, and his control over our lives.
