Psalm 72 – Praying For Our Leaders

by | May 25, 2020

God, give your justice to the king and your righteousness to the king’s son… May he vindicate the afflicted among the people, help the poor, and crush the oppressor. (Psalms 72:1,4)

How often do you pray for the government leaders who are guiding us through these unprecedented times? Every day they’re making life-or-death decisions with incomplete information and conflicting advice from experts. Now more than ever, we need local, state, and national leaders who “vindicate the afflicted, help the poor, and crush the oppressor,” whether those oppressors are microscopic viruses or people using the chaos and confusion of this season to take advantage of others. Our leaders need God’s blessing desperately!
And still, even with the blessing of God, our leaders are still human. They make mistakes. They act out of fear, selfishness, cowardice, and arrogance. That’s why it’s such a relief to know that we have a King over every human king. That’s the king Solomon is talking about later in this Psalm: “May he rule from sea to sea and from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth (72:8). Jesus is the “king’s son” (in other words, descendent of David) who is just and righteous, and brings God’s blessings to the ends of the earth. And one day our loving and sovereign King will come back to bring heaven to earth and wipe every tear from our eye.
