Psalm 61 – The Solid Rock
When my heart is without strength. Lead me to a rock that is high above me, for you have been a refuge for me, a strong tower in the face of the enemy. (Psalms 61:2-3)
David’s prayer was that he would find his footing, his foundation, his security in something more sure than himself and anything else. David called out to God and said, “Lord, lead me to the rock that is higher than I!” Why a rock? A rock is dense. A rock is heavy. And if that rock is big enough, it’s immovable.
The only rock in this life is definitely not our health, not our bank accounts, not our careers, not our future on earth, and not even our relationships with those close to us. The only unshakable and certain rock and foundation is Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Rock that is higher, wider, and stronger than us. And on this Rock we can stand above our enemies of sin, death, and evil. Hear the words from the song The Solid Rock:
“My hope is built on nothing less, than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ Name. Oh Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. When darkness seems to hide His face, I rest on His unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. Oh Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand”
