Psalm 59 – Rejoicing In Times Of Trouble
But I will sing of your strength and will joyfully proclaim your faithful love in the morning. For you have been a stronghold for me, a refuge in my day of trouble. (Psalms 59:16)
In this life there will always be trouble. We live in a world where you cannot avoid hearing bad news. We live in a world where sickness, sin, and death are unavoidable realities. Some people deal with trouble by ignoring it. Some deal with trouble by feeling deep despair. How are Christian’s supposed to deal with trouble?
In Psalm 59, the psalmist explains that Christian’s praise God through it. They praise God through trouble. They do not deny the reality of terrible things in life. We are not ignorant optimists. But we also do not allow the reality of evil overwhelm us. The fact is that because of the fact that Jesus has solved our biggest issue, namely our separation from God because of our sin, we always have more to rejoice in than we have to despair in. We can sing in the midst of trouble and proclaim God’s faithful love every morning because we have a refuge in Christ Jesus. Jesus saved us from eternal punishment. So we have an eternity of life with God to look forward to. With that in mind, we can rejoice no matter how much trouble we find ourselves in.
