Psalm 55 – Cast Your Burdens
Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never allow the righteous to be shaken. (Psalms 55:22)
How do you normally deal with anxiety? What do you do when you wake up at 3am and you’re worried about keeping your savings account loaded, or looking good on your daily Zoom calls? David says instead of breaking out the Tylenol PM, break out in prayer. Cast your burdens and anxieties on God.
The thing is, when you cast your anxieties on God, it doesn’t mean you’ll never feel anxious again. In 2 Corinthians 11, Paul said he had daily anxiety for the churches he had planted. And remember – this is the same guy who said in Philippians 4, “Be anxious for nothing.” What Paul seems to be implying is that when you cast your burdens on God, he takes your self-centered anxieties, and replaces them with God-centered anxieties. For example, if your finances get tight and you might need to move out of your house, you’re not anxious anymore about finding the perfect place that will keep you at the standard of living you enjoy now. You’re anxious about losing the relationships you’ve established with your neighbors, because you desperately want them to know Jesus. It’s not wrong to be anxious, only to be anxious about the wrong things.
