Psalm 52 – Flourishing With God
But I am like a flourishing olive tree in the house of God; I trust in God’s faithful love forever and ever. (Psalm 52:8)
Have you ever wanted to be a part of something that was lasting? Something that transcended the few years of life that you live on this earth. Unfortunately, there aren’t many things out there that last forever. The greatest palaces, the greatest cities, the greatest people all are subject to time. All things come to an end. All things become the stuff of garage sales, dumps, and history books. So if you want to be a part of something lasting you can’t look to this world. You have to look to God.
An olive tree can live for hundreds of years. And the picture this psalm is giving us is of someone who flourishes. Who continues to provide fruit for a long time. Now that kind of lasting flourishing can’t come apart from God, because apart from God we have nothing. But in God’s presence, his house, we can have an abundance of joy despite our circumstances. For those who hope in God’s faithful love they can expect hardships and trials but those things don’t last. Like anything else in the world they will pass. But God provides joy that lasts. He provides you with the opportunity to be a part of a family, of a kingdom that will never fade away.
