Psalm 39 – Live For Everlasting Life

READ PSALM 39

You have made my days just inches long, and my life span is as nothing to you. Yes, every human being stands as only a vapor. (Psalms 39:5)

Over the last month, we’ve been painfully reminded of the fragility of life. David compares the span of our lives to a “vapor” or “breath.” To experience what David is saying, try taking a breath right now. Breathe in, breathe out. That was your entire life, and everything you’ve ever pursued in life. Every dream, ambition, and goal. Every desire, longing, and lust. Every accomplishment, achievement, and ability. It’s a breath. A mist. A vapor.

As Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 1, “Everything is a vapor.” You say, really, everything? What about love, and romance, and marriage? … “A vapor.” … What about money, and career, and success? … “A breath.” … What about vacations, and travel, and Insta-worthy experiences? … “A mist.” … David and Solomon learned the lesson we’re learning right now: everything in this world apart from God just won’t last. Which is why David says a few verses later, “Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you” (Psalms 39:7).
