Psalm 16 – God Holds The Future
Lord, you are my portion and my cup of blessing; you hold my future. (Psalms 16:5)
In the ancient world, offering someone a cup of water or wine was a way to communicate love, comfort, and fellowship. David often found himself completely alone while he was running for his life, but he still experienced the love and companionship of God. While we’re cut off from friends, extended family, and church family, it’s a great opportunity for us to pursue deeper fellowship with Jesus.
When we do, we’ll find comfort in his power and strength. In the Hebrew, “you hold my future” is literally “you make my lot secure.” It’s referring to the lot of land you inherited from your great-great-grandfather. In this crisis we might lose paychecks, possessions, even property inherited from great-great-grandparents. But our spiritual inheritance in Christ can never be touched: “Give thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light. 13 He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. 14 In him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:12-14).
