Psalm 9 – You Aren’t Abandoned
The Lord is a refuge for the persecuted, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you because you have not abandoned those who seek you, Lord. (Psalms 9:9-10)
When an earth-shaking crisis strikes, there are four ways to think about God in it: 1) God doesn’t exist so can’t do anything about it, 2) God isn’t powerful enough to stop it, 3) God doesn’t care enough to stop it, or 4) God has a greater purpose for it. When David was being hunted down by men who wanted to kill him, he went with option 4.
He understood that God uses really hard times in life to help us realize something that’s always true: God is a refuge who will never abandon us. Refuge literally means a “high place” — a safe place high above floods and invading armies. A rock fortress on the top of a mountain isn’t going to move, so when we run to God we’re guaranteed he won’t abandon us.
