(Monday) Psalm 23: A Shepherd’s Song
There are two metaphors in the psalm: the shepherd (23:1-4) and the host (23:5-6). Compare and contrast these two images.

Look carefully at the shepherd. How does he care for his sheep (23:1-4)?

“I will fear no evil” is a bold statement. What gives the author, David, that courage?

What fear in your life are you dealing with right now? How does this psalm address it?

Does faith always remove the need for human qualifications? Why or why not? When is it proper to trust God to overcome our deficiencies?

(Wednesday) Psalm 19: Outdoor Lessons
What does creation reveal about God (19:1-6)?

How is Scripture described in verses 7-11?

What is the overall effect of David’s encounter with God through nature and the Scriptures (19:12-14)?

Which of the effects of Scripture listed in this psalm have you personally experienced?

Prayer Focus: Asking God to make the Scripture more precious than any other earthly object to you.

(Thursday) 1 Samuel 20: Jonathan’s Loyalty
How does the love between David and Jonathan express itself in their commitment to each other?

How does Jonathan’s experience with Saul demonstrate some of the costs of friendship (20:30-42)?

What do we learn about the level of intimacy between David and Jonathan (20:41-42)?

What factors inhibit this kind of intimacy in your friendships?

Family Devotional: Read 1 Samuel 20:4. Were David and Jonathan good friends? Who is your best friend? How does God want us to treat our best friends?

(Friday) Psalm 27: Ups and Downs
Why is David able to be fearless in the face of evil men, armies, and war (27:1-3)?

David seeks not only the Lord’s protection, but the Lord himself. How is David’s intense desire for God revealed in this Psalm (27:4,8,11)?

David’s confident statements about the Lord (v. 1-6) lead up to his prayer in verses 7-12. What is the substance of his prayer?

The psalm begins and ends with an affirmation of David’s confidence in the Lord’s help. How can David’s view of God help you to “be strong and let your heart take courage” in the midst of suffering?
