I’m exhausted, Lord. But you know that. The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of meetings and activities, and in the few spare moments I’ve had, I’ve been sweating hard to finish some work on our house that’s about a year overdue.
I could use a good vacation. Which is why I was drawn to Matthew 11, where you promised rest to all of us who labor and are heavy-laden.
That’s me, so bring it on, Lord! I’ll take the lounge-chair by the pool (on a less-congested island than this one), with a good book, steady tradewinds, and plenty of tropical drinks to cool me off from the blazing sun.
But that’s not what you’re promising, is it? You’re talking about some kind of rest that I can have even in the middle of the stressful times.
When I’m preparing for a Bible study that starts in fifteen minutes, and the phone rings with a mother who thinks her kid might be on drugs.
When I’m leaving the coffee house for an important appointment I’m already late for, and a random person sees my Bible and wants to talk about Jesus.
You’re not talking about a three-day-weekend off from work… you’re talking about a permanent spiritual vacation, aren’t you? OK. I guess I could use that too. Let’s talk about it some more this week, Lord.
