Heroes: Primetime Philosophy

heroes_logo.jpgLast night after I put the kids to bed, I happened to catch the last half of a new show called Heroes. Clearly trying to be the next “Lost,” it appears to have a slowly-revealing storyline about a group of people who are coming to discover that they have superpowers they didn’t know they possessed. Somehow, these people have evolved into something greater than mere mortals.

I was starting to get bored with this cliched comic-book story, but then they hit me with a closing line of narration: “Evolution is an imperfect and often violent process. Morality loses its meaning. The question of good and evil is reduced to one simple choice: survive or perish.”

It’s not often you see a TV show exploring the logical conclusion of the evolutionist’s worldview: that there is no reason for us to have any morals or ethics if we owe our existence to the amoral actions of our evolutionary forefathers who scratched and clawed their way to the top of the foodchain. It will be interesting to see how they tease out this question in the next few episodes.
